what is modern?

twentieth-century style characterized by simplicity of form, absence of decorative ornament, and emphasis on functional concerns. The word "modern" has the literal meanings of "recent" or "current" and therefore came into use in discussion and criticism of art and design to describe developments of the early 20th century in which historicism and dependence on traditions were rejected in favor of directions that would relate to the social economic and technological realities of the "Machine Age"
